The rest of the world can have their stamps and coins. I prefer the road less traveled, so I collect pencils. Not only am I a pencil collector I am president of the APCS (American Pencil Collectors Society) I don't collect the standard yellow number 2's, but rather advertising pencils. As long as it's a pencil and it advertises something, I try to snatch it up. In addition to the run-of-the-mill ad pencil, I also collect carpenter, bullet, golf and mechanical pencils.
I like pencils that break from the norm! For example, a pencil that has two erasers on the same end to give the appearence of a hammer. Or get rid of the eraser all together and stick a wooden egg on top. (That was a result of WWII. Rubber was in great demand, so the advertiser replaced the eraser with a novelty end.) What to see what I am talking, check out my example page.
What makes a carpenter pencil different from the rest? Check out this section of Pencil Pages for all the info you could possibly want.
Bullet pencils, also called pencil holders, look like a rifle cartridge. The "bullet" is hollow so a golf pencil-sized pencil can be stuck in it. To use as this pencil, the bullet is pulled out of its casing and stuck back in the opposite way creating a pencil that is normal sized. This form of pencil came about during the civil war. Soldiers would stick a pencil in the end of used rifle cartriges so the tips would not break off while the pencil was stuck in thier packs. examples
Golf pencils are short, stubby little pencils given out on the range to write down a score two strokes less than actually hit. These pencils aren't reserved for just golf courses and the local putt-putt place. In fact anytime a large number of pencils needs to be supplied for writing (i.e. to fill out lottery cards, communion cards in church, with hotel stationary in the room), these pencils are usually supplied since they are cheaper than the longer variety.
Most people like mechanical pencils because they always have a sharp point. I like them because goofy things can be stuck in the end of them by advertisers (i.e. a smoke shop put a butane lighter in theirs, a pharmacy put some mock up pills; and a mechanic put a small spark plug in his). picture of one
Hey, I'm not the only one that collect these things! Check out these other sites.
Speaking of other sites, why not check out my other hobby at the offical Mankato Scrabble club web site.
I always need more pencils for my collection, so if you have any unsharpened ones just laying around I would be happy to take them off your hands. Just email me and we can work out the details. westberg@hickorytech.net
