Aug. 5, Tues, 7 pm.  Business meeting at the church.

Tee shirts:  Tom reported that he can get a dozen for $9.50 apiece, wants to know how much we should charge.  Answer: $10, the point is not to make money.  Tom gets check for $114, will go ahead and have club-logo tee-shirts, green on beige, 4 L and 8 XL, for sale at the picnic.

Possible programs:  Tom has his eye on the Chaska HS guys who paddled to Hudson Bay and the Gaylord woman who got lost in Alaska as potential programs next winter.  Gary wondered if someone who got lost would be a good example, but others thought it would be educational.  Tom will look into both.  Later in the meeting it was suggested that the U of M geologists working in the LeSueur basin might be interesting to listen to and Mark will explore that possibility.

Past Events:  The boat trials were lots of fun.  So why not do it again, Gary suggested.  Tom said too much of a good thing might spoil it, but the consensus was to do it again in August, Gary in charge.

The MPOC played an important part in the North Mankato Triathlon, giving help to several struggling swimmers.  One even called out, “Help!”  This was the club’s 11th appearance, and the most action we have seen.

Coming Events: Peggy says the July 5 river trip is on, although she has not had any phone calls about it yet and the water level in the LeSueur is low and they may have to go elsewhere.  To be decided at the church.

The annual picnic at Lura Lake will start at 5 pm, although Mark will have the war canoe there early if people are interested.  We will not make a reservation. “No one ever comes on a Tuesday,” Warren says, “so let’s save $25.”   It will be a potluck, bring your own everything.  Club will not provide.  There may be door prizes, and the new tee shirts will be on sale at $10.

Brand points out the scheduling mess that has him in charge of a river trip on July 18 and the Rapidan Day on July 19.  He apologizes, but says he cannot do both.  Tom steps in will take charge of the river trip.

Brands goes around the room to recruit help for Rapidan Day: Mary and Gary say they may be available.   Unfortunately, many of the club’s strongest paddlers (Mark, Peggy, Warren, Paul) will be out of town; the second string will need to step up.  Brand remains confident.

MPOC hat logos:  Mark says Jean will make some MPOC logos patches that can be glued to hats if there is interest.  There is enthusiasm, and Mark will tell Jean.

Treasurer’s Report: The club has $1,674.99 after paying Tom for the tee shirts.  The club also added two more new members to reach 58, the largest membership in many years.  With this fat treasury, it was voted to pay the church $125 for the use of their space.  It was also decided, after some discussion, to put out a “Donations” plate at all programs, and use the money as appropriate, to pay speakers, to pay the church extra, etc.

Equipment: Gary’s mechanic looked at the multiboat trailer but hasn’t said what he could do.  Mark proposes going to TSC and buying the necessary materials.  Warren puts in his thoughts, which differ from Mark’s.  Brand makes a motion to create a Committee of Three – Mark, Gary, and Warren – who are authorized to make the necessary decisions and spend up to $330 to fix the multiboat trailer.  The motion passes.  Mark recalls that he gave the trailer to the club, and Warren points out that someone gave it to Mark too.  All smiled.  We moved on.

Archivist:  Brand reads from a December 1993 HUT! Magazine report by Peggy Kreber on the formation of the MPOC in July of that year.  This is the 15th anniversary of the club, and several original members were present: Warren, Peggy, and Paul (Tom was one too, but he had left).  It was suggested that we make something of the anniversary at the annual picnic.  Marks says he will do a newsletter/flier for that purpose.

Environmental damage: Mary reports a new construction site on river right of the LeSueur downstream from the Highway 41 bridge.  The bank has been obnoxiously altered.  It is suggested that she contact the county environmental services office and report it.  Mark has done that in the past and they can be helpful.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Brand Frentz, secretary
