Aluminum Cans Build Habitat for Humanity Homes

Wouldn't you like to help the environment while also helping to build more homes for those in need? ACBHHH is a national program with the Aluminum Association that allows money from recycled aluminum cans to go directly to Habitat affiliates (and directly into building more homes and protect the environment without costing you anything. We already have this partnership going in Mankato and with your help we can make it an incredible success. We are looking for organizations, churches, schools, companies, clubs, and all other willing locations to host recycling bins to help us collect cans. Our affiliate has all of the necessary materials and we would love to talk to you about setting up a location.

Individuals looking to donate cans are invited to call the Habitat office or visit the can shed page for the current location of the Aluminum Can Recycling Trailer. Donations can be brought to that address also. For more information, please call us at the office at 388-2081. We are also seeking volunteers to help us strengthen this program. If you are interested please call us at the given number.

Our Habitat affiliate recycles ink jet and laser printer cartridges and also cell phones as a fundraising project. You may drop off your cartridges at the Habitat office, 512 E. Mulberry. Construction Costs

The average cost of building each house to our affiliate is about $100,000. Much of the money used to cover these costs comes from contributions by individuals. Every donation is tax deductible and stays with the affiliate long after the next house is built. This happens because all the money put into a particular Habitat home returns to the affiliate as the homeowners pay off their no-profit, zero interest mortgage. This means that every gift given will continue to build more houses.

The following is an example of what various gifts can be used for:

$10 A floor joist
$20 A 50-lb box of nails
$30 A roof truss
$40 5 gallons of paint
$50 An interior door
$75 8 sheets of wallboard
$100 3 boxes of flooring material
$250 50 bundles of roof shingles

Unless specified otherwise, your money doesn't stop there, each affiliate tithes with Habitat International to build houses in other countries. For about 10% of the average cost of a house in the United states, Habitat can build another house in a developing country. Habitat of South Central Minnesota tithing supports Habitat for Humanity of Tanzania.

Material Donations

We can also utilize material donations to help reduce our building costs. Quality new or used supplies, such as lights, lumber, trim, doors, and other building material can all help us get one house closer to ending sub-standard housing in South Central Minnesota. We are also always on the lookout for land.

Our "Wish List"

With multiple building sites, we have put together a "wish list" of additional tools we will need. These include:

Pneumatic roofing nailers
Pneumatic framing nailers
Scaffolding
16' Scaffolding
Fiberglass ladders
Planks

Trade Labor

We are continually seeking donations of labor from related trades. Those include skilled labor donating time to building, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, drywall, as well as helping draft house plans, etc. To set up a material donation or to volunteer individually or as a group please call the office at 507-388-2081.
