Good Thunder Fire Department

Burn Photos

Background

On May 14, 1993, we began the long job of building the fire station by the burning of nearly a block of old buildings on Main Street. Our department set the burn up as a drill and invited area departments to participate. We had 27 departments attend, which included 150 firefighters, 14 pumpers, 15 tankers, two rescue trucks, two grassfire rigs, two ambulances, one air tank refill truck, two water augers, and one equipment van. The buildings were ignited and extinguished several times during the course of the drill. 383,000 gallons of water was pumped during the actual burn after all drilling was completed. The water was all hauled with tankers from the river so as not to deplete the town's water supply. Over 100 SCBA tanks were refilled by the air truck, and about 715 gallons of fuel were used by the trucks.

Overhead At the start... This was taken from a boom truck 70 feet in the air (by a person who even hates to climb stairs...I really wanted the pic!) This picture was taken as the firefighters were making preparations to set the blaze.
Fire is going pretty good at this point... This is a shot when the buildings were nearly totally engulfed.
The water guys...This truck was stationed at the river to refill all the pumpers from the river. We wanted to avoid the drain on the town's water supply.
Not much remaining here... At this point, all that remained was the lone wall you see on the left...it stood for a long time before it finally fell.
The smoking rubble... This was taken the following morning. Our firefighters remained on the scene all night watching over the smoking pile.
Getting ready to build... After everything was cooled and the rubble that could be was buried, the ground was smoothed and leveled and we had a large empty lot--a hole in the town, basically!--for almost 2 years while we got the necessary permits, studies, materials, and oh, yes..money!
Walls! We are getting walls! Construction finally began...
And rooms! It's starting to look like a Station now!
It's a STATION! OK, it still doesn't have a sign...but it is done enough we are all moved in!
1972 Ford Pumper on the tarmac and ready to roll!
